Digital Downloads: Technical queries

What format files do you sell on the Hospital Shop?
Our MP3 downloads are 320kbps continuous bit rate files. Our WAV downloads are 44.1khz 16-bit WAV files.

Neither of our digital formats have any kind of DRM (Digital Rights Management) or copy protection built in: We believe that most people like to be treated as customers and not potential criminals – DRM is easily circumvented and just puts obstacles in the way of enjoying music.

How were these files encoded?
WAV files are the original lossless master files of all of our tracks and mixes. The MP3s are encoded from these master WAVs at 320kbps at a continuous bit rate.

Can I download tracks from anywhere in the world?
As long as you have a good internet connection and a fairly modern browser (We recommend Safari on Mac or Chrome on Windows!) you can access and use Hospital Records Shop anywhere in the world, whether using an Apple Mac, a Windows based PC or even a modern Linux ditribution. Lots of bandwidth and a fast connection obviously helps too!

While our shop functions perfectly on Apple’s iPhone, iPod and iPad devices, you cannot download music from our shop straight to your device. Music must first be synced through iTunes on your Mac or PC.

Am I listening to the final files on the website’s music player?
No. The Hospital Records player plays a low-quality (and thus quick-loading) 64kbps MP3 version of the final file. The sound quality of the final downloaded version, whether WAV or 320kbps MP3, is far better and to most people indistinguishable from a CD.

Can I download from the Hospital Records Shop if I am using cellular data connection or public wi-fi?
Providing you are not trying to download your files directly to your iPhone, iPod or iPad (see above!), then you should be able to download your files using any kind of internet connection! You may, however, find that files take a long time to download, as this is dependent on your local connection.

Why are your WAV files more expensive than your MP3 files?
Our WAV files are lossless, uncompressed files, which means the quality of file is technically higher than our MP3 downloads. This makes the files considerably bigger (generally 3-4 times the size of our 320kbps MP3s), and therefore they cost us considerably more in bandwidth to deliver to you than our MP3s do.

Please be aware this also means the files will take up considerably more room on your hard drive or music-playing device when downloaded!
